A Practical Guide to Using Dental Insurance in Thailand

When it comes to dental care in Thailand, it is a common misconception that patients must pay entirely out-of-pocket and that insurance does not cover them. In fact, many expats and tourists have successfully used their insurance coverage to pay for high-quality dental care here.

This Pacific Prime article, in collaboration with Dental Corporation, is a step-by-step guide showing how you can utilize the significant percentage savings in dental insurance here in Thailand, whether it be cashless direct-billing or reimbursement.

Understanding Your Insurance Type: What Applies Overseas?

Before you can claim expenses for dental services, the first step is to understand what type of insurance you have and check your insurance policies for coverage.

  • International Health/Dental Insurance: Policies designed for global coverage (e.g., Cigna Global, Allianz Care, LUMA Health, AXA). These offer the smoothest transition for cross-border care.
  • Domestic Policies with Out-of-Network/International Riders: Standard policies from your home country might reimburse out-of-country emergency or elective care if you purchased some foreign coverage rider to your plan before traveling.
  • Corporate or Group Insurance: Expats working in regional offices of global companies often have corporate dental coverage or a plan rider that they can use.
  • Local Thai Insurance: Local Thai insurers will be your most reliable option for dental coverage because they can advise which dental clinics are covered under their provider networks in Thailand. These policies often cover basic teeth cleaning and tooth extractions up to a specific annual cap.

Two Paths to Payment: Direct Billing vs. Reimbursement

Claims for dental treatment through insurance companies may be done cashless via direct billing networks or paying up-front in advance to your hospital and reimbursing or claiming the amounts back from your insurer.

Direct-Billing Network

Several internationally accredited Thai dental clinics (such as BIDH Dental Hospital, Bangkok International Dental Center, Bumrungrad International Hospital, and Bangkok Hospital Dental Center) offer direct billing with many global insurers.

Patients only need to present their insurance card, verify the coverage on-site, and pay only the remaining deductible or co-payment if applicable.

Reimbursement Model

To claim your dental bill with your insurer, you will need a filled insurance form with the dentist’s signature along with official receipts from the hospital. This is the most common route for clinics with insurance claim policies.

The patient pays the bill upfront in Thai Baht (THB) and submits the required documents to their insurer post-treatment.

Pre-Treatment Before Boarding Your Flight

Before scheduling your overseas appointment, you may want to find out the costs of treatment to serve as a baseline for comparison, clarify any conditions of your insurance coverage, obtain pre-authorization and obtain any necessary forms from your insurer for reimbursement.

If your insurance plan pays for a preliminary evaluation, get a treatment plan and x-rays done with your local dentist first. If you do not have coverage, you can call up your local dentist for draft pricing or research online on treatment prices.

Then, check your insurance coverage and take note of standard policy clauses, such as claims limit caps, type of treatment, exclusions and reimbursement forms required. This is to ensure you can have your treatment covered seamlessly and avoid any hiccups during your recovery.

For major procedures such as implants and crowns, pre-authorization or approval from your insurer is almost always required before treatment begins. Cosmetic dental works such as veneers and teeth whitening are typically excluded from insurance plans.

If you must file for your reimbursement afterwards, request that your insurer send you insurance forms and a proposed diagnostic code that are claimable in advance. Having these on hand will enable the clinic and hospital to timely and accurately complete your insurance forms and provide the necessary documents.

Common Essential Documents for Insurance Claims

Below is a checklist of documents to request before checking out of your hospital or clinic in Thailand:

  • An official and itemized medical receipt (denominated in THB). Most insurance will require the original receipt and not copies.
  • A signed Medical Certificate explicitly detailing the diagnosis and treatments performed, written in English.
  • Your insurer’s claim form, filled out and signed by your treating Thai dentist.

Sample Case

A leading specialized dental hospital, Bangkok International Dental Hospital (BIDH) on Sukhumvit 2, has extensive international insurance claims handling experience that makes the reimbursement process quick and easy.

BIDH Dental Hospital uses international ICD-10 for its itemized receipts given on the same day of treatment. If insurance forms are given in advance during appointment booking or registration, the hospital will target returning the forms within the week after treatment is completed by your working dentists.

For patients using direct billing, the authorization process can range from three business days to around two weeks. Treatments’ approval and scheduling will depend on each insurer’s response time back to the hospital or clinic provider.

With the right preparation, making an international dental insurance claim in Thailand is manageable. Contact your chosen Thai hospital or clinic’s international patient coordination department in advance to verify the process and make your healthcare experience in Thailand as smooth as possible.
