Tesla starts EV sale in Thailand

Exciting news for expats looking to purchase a Tesla (Tesla Inc.) in Thailand. From December 7th, 2022, you can book to purchase a Model 3 or Model Y. The timing of the bookings comes at a juncture when competitors from China are all competing for a share of the electric vehicle (EV) market in Thailand, as well as the formation of several tax-related measures to boost domestic EV demand.

Expats living in Thailand can contact Tesla Inc. directly and purchase a vehicle. Delivery is expected in the first quarter of 2023. This Pacific Prime Thailand article provides further details regarding the announcement.

Tesla – the latest EV entrant into Thailand

Since the beginning of 2022, the Kingdom has announced several incentives to boost the purchase of electric vehicles over petrol-run vehicles. Some incentives include exemption and reduction of import duty and excise tax. And since Thai consumers have enthusiastically received the EV incentives, Tesla Inc. has also moved to bring their models for Thai consumers to purchase.

About Tesla (Tesla Inc.)

Tesla is an automotive and energy-producing company that designs, develops, manufactures, sells, and leases electric vehicles, as well as provides energy generation and storage systems. Their production line vehicles include:

  • Model Y
  • Cybertruck
  • Model 3
  • Tesla Semi
  • Model X
  • Tesla Roadster
  • Model S

As of this writing, Tesla will only be taking bookings in Thailand for its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles. And according to Yvonne Chan, Tesla’s country director for Thailand, the Model 3’s price tag will start from THB ฿1.76 million (or around USD $50,200), whereas the Model Y’s price tag will start from THB ฿1.96 million (USD $55,987).

Tesla and its competitors

The automotive giant can expect plenty of stiff competition from Chinese players such as Great Wall Motor, BYD, and Hozon, who are already fairly established and competing for the attention of Thai consumers. And to overcome the competition, Tesla will be opening its first service center in Thailand by the first quarter of 2023, as well as its first supercharger facility by February 2023. Thai and expat consumers can expect at least 10 more supercharging sites to be available in Bangkok in 2023.
