And for those suffering from long COVID-19 (aka long COVID), it\u2019s not going anywhere anytime soon. The result? Employers can\u2019t ignore the pandemic (just yet). Whether it\u2019s through absenteeism or presenteeism, it\u2019s no surprise that sick employees are bad news for any thriving business. So much so that this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.co.th\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacific Prime Thailand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article will go over what long COVID is (including long COVID symptoms), why employers should help, and, most importantly, how they can help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class='code-block code-block-4' style='margin: 8px 0; clear: both;'>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.co.th\/plans\/corporate\/?campSource=PPTH-Blog&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=content_banner&utm_campaign=Blog_Banner&utm_content=corporate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.co.th\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/SEO-Baner-Corporate.webp\" alt=\"Corporate insurance banner\" width=\"1138\" height=\"493\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is long COVID?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Bangkok Hospital, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokhospital.com\/en\/content\/long-covid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long COVID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a term used to describe the effects of COVID-19 that persists for weeks or months after the infection has gone. While recovery usually takes a few days to a week, and most people recover within 12 weeks, symptoms can last longer for some people. Long COVID can occur regardless of whether the symptoms are mild or severe at first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long COVID symptoms<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common long COVID symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic fatigue or weakness, and\/or feeling tired easily\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing, e.g. shortness of breath\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough and chest pain or chest discomfort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache, impaired concentration (brain fog), and\/or memory problems\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle or joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of smell or taste<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression and anxiety\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And others.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long COVID diagnosis and treatment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As long COVID is still not well understood, it can be difficult to receive a diagnosis. Inc. spoke to a patient who said it took a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/melissa-angell\/long-covid-employee-support-resources-benefits.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long time for him to receive a diagnosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He had to spend five weeks at four different hospitals until he finally got a diagnosis for autoimmune encephalitis, which may be a consequence of his long COVID. Additionally, he also said that experts have no idea how to treat him. This is the reality for many patients with long COVID.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why should employers support employees with long COVID?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many employers are in the \u2018return to office\u2019 mode and aren\u2019t necessarily thinking about employees with long COVID. But just like any sickness can result in employees taking a higher number of sick days (absenteeism) or being faced with lowered productivity whilst at work (presenteeism), so can long COVID. As you might have guessed, this can disrupt workflow and business outcomes, as well as have a negative impact on the bottom line.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the pandemic and the world, COVID-19 infections and death have also been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economicsobservatory.com\/why-are-people-some-socio-economic-groups-more-vulnerable-coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more common amongst disadvantaged groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This difference in vulnerability stems from a combination of socio-economic differences in disease exposure, health behaviors, and health conditions. As such, not accounting for long COVID can mean that businesses are not being truly diverse or inclusive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not familiar with diversity and inclusivity in the workplace? Although there\u2019s no magic solution for dealing with long COVID, these approaches may help:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Recognize that long COVID is a real condition\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some long COVID symptoms may be subjective &#8211; i.e. extreme tiredness, it\u2019s important that HR professionals and managers don\u2019t just pass it off as a personal issue. Saying things like \u201cyou should sleep or rest more\u201d doesn\u2019t help when you\u2019re dealing with long COVID, so treat these symptoms like you\u2019d treat any other serious, long-term medical condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Accommodate employees as much as possible\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the employee what they need and accommodate if you can. If the employee feels that flexible working arrangements would be helpful and that doesn\u2019t impact their role whatsoever, then try your best to enable that. If employees work in a labor-intensive role and don&#8217;t have the energy for it, see if it\u2019s possible to retrain them for a different role. You get the idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A word about accommodating employees:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Treating employees with respect and showing that you care will boost their morale, and make them loyal and happy workers. While skills and knowledge can be taught and learnt on the job, a good attitude is something that comes from within.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.
