Sadly, for some expats, this perk is slowly disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>In this article by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.co.th\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pacific Prime Thailand<\/a>, we will investigate the case of the climbing Thai baht and its impact on expats living in the country.<\/p>\n<div class='code-block code-block-5' style='margin: 8px 0; clear: both;'>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.co.th\/compare-quotes\/?campSource=PPTH-Blog&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=content_banner&utm_campaign=Blog_Banner&utm_content=general\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.co.th\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Blog-Banner_Thailand_3.jpg\" width=\"1138\" height=\"493\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n\n<h2>What\u2019s happening to the baht?<\/h2>\n<p>If you are new to Thailand or aren\u2019t familiar with the country\u2019s financial situation, the baht\u2019s concerning rate of appreciation is one of the first things you should get to grips with, as this financial trend is likely to have a significant impact on your personal savings.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bot.or.th\/english\/statistics\/financialmarkets\/exchangerate\/_layouts\/application\/exchangerate\/exchangerate.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mid-2000s<\/a>, the baht valued at approximately THB \u0e3f40 per US dollar. Fast forward to January of 2019 and the baht has strengthened to THB \u0e3f32.3 per US dollar, appreciating by around 7% in 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>Since January, the baht has strengthened at an even more alarming rate, valuing at THB \u0e3f30.4 per US dollar, marking a 5.8% appreciation in less than 10 months.<\/p>\n<p>If you are new to exchange rates, this may not sound like a lot. But consider this &#8211; the baht is currently at its strongest point in over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationthailand.com\/Economy\/30371482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6 years<\/a> and for over 10 months, it has <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Business\/Markets\/Thai-baht-outperforms-Asian-currency-peers-on-Fed-s-dovish-turn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outperformed<\/a> all of its Asian peers.<\/p>\n<h3>Causes<\/h3>\n<p>The factors driving the baht\u2019s strength are intricate and complicated, involving both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-01-31\/no-stopping-baht-as-em-asia-s-best-performance-extends-into-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">domestic and external factors<\/a>. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Safe-haven currency: <\/strong>The baht is seen as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationthailand.com\/noname\/30375435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safe-haven<\/a> currency that is resilient against uncertain global economic conditions. This has led foreign investors to redirect their funds to Thailand, causing inflows of capital into the country, and thus, strengthening the baht.<\/li>\n<li><strong><strong><strong>Tourist arrivals: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Despite ups and downs in the past year, Thailand\u2019s tourism industry remains massive with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/business\/1734411\/tourism-boss-snips-2019-foreign-arrivals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">39 million visitors<\/a> expected in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/kasikornresearch.com\/en\/analysis\/k-econ\/business\/Pages\/z3035.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10 million<\/a> of which are forecasted to be from China. This brings further capital into Thailand, strengthening the baht.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current-account surplus:<\/strong> Thailand\u2019s transactions with the rest of the world show more gains, indicating a high demand for Thai goods around the world, and thus for its currency. Thailand recorded a <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/thailand\/current-account\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">current account surplus<\/a> of USD $3.9 billion in August 2019, much higher than its 20 year average of USD $634 million.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Bank of Thailand\u2019s reaction<\/h3>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s central bank has, time and again, tried to tame the baht, but the currency remains stubborn. From regulating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/business\/1702492\/measures-to-curb-hot-money-ahead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hot-money inflows<\/a> to lowering the policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/business\/1726175\/bot-surprises-cuts-key-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interest rate<\/a>, so far, the BOT\u2019s measures seem to have little impact on the baht\u2019s strength.<\/p>\n<h2>How will it affect me?<\/h2>\n<p>A stronger baht means that the baht in your bank account is now worth more when converted to other currencies, compared to a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>For tourists, Thailand is losing one of its financial charms as an affordable holiday destination. For expats living in the country, this phenomenon has serious implications on their livelihood. For expat retirees, it poses a financial obstacle, while for working expats, it presents a prime opportunity.<\/p>\n<h3>Obstacles for expat retirees<\/h3>\n<p>In 2018, the Thai government issued some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-03\/thailand-s-surging-baht-shatters-expat-dreams-of-easy-retirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">800,000 retirement visas<\/a> to expats from countries like the UK, the US, China, and Switzerland. For many expat retirees, retirement pension from home is their main source of income.<\/p>\n<p>However, as the baht appreciates against other currencies like the sterling, US dollar, and Swiss franc, these pensions are worth less and less in Thai baht. The quickly diminishing pension value, when combined with rising costs of living in big cities like Bangkok, can lead to a heavy financial strain on expat retirees in the Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>For Britons, who are among the largest groups of expats living in Thailand, the weakened pound sterling &#8211; resulting from Brexit speculation &#8211; exacerbates the financial problem for retirees.<\/p>\n<h3>Opportunities for expats currently working in Thailand<\/h3>\n<p>By contrast, the strengthening baht can become a perk of working in Thailand. One side effect of currency appreciation to the economy is that imports become cheaper.
